This was not a terrible vampire movie. There have been so many truly horrible ones in the last few years that is a high compliment.
It's 2019. Vampires have taken over the world due to a viral epidemic. Humans have become a scarce commodity and the majority of the world is starving. Dr. Edward Dalton (Ethan Hawke) is a hematologist working on a blood substitute when he runs into a group of humans. Having a soft spot for them, he helps them hide instead of turning them over. The leader of the group, Audrey (Claudia Karvan), recruits him to help them out since a blood substitute benefits both parties. She introduces him to Lional Cormac (Willem Dafoe), a one-time custom mechanic turned vampire turned human. Yep, Lionel accidentally discovered a cure. Now, Edward has to recreate the experiment, proving it as viable, before his evil boss (Sam Neill) has all the humans hunted down and killed.
It's an interesting idea and a different take on the mythos which is welcome, frankly. I've read a lot of vampire legends, vampire fiction, and seen the majority of vampire movies. I had never come across anything with a hook quite like this one. It reminded me a little of a book I had read called Vamped by David Sosnowski. If you can find it, I heartily recommend it.
Anyway, back to the movie. If you like vampires and are sick of the stupid teenaged crap, pick this one up.
