Oscar Nominations 2026

 OhMyGodIt'sHappening.gif

The nominations are out!  And they look...a lot like the Critics' Choice nominations.  This is to be expected.  However!  There was a lot more love for horror movies this year, which is a hugely positive development.

Best Picture

F1 is a little surprising for Best Picture but the rest are basically the same as Critics' Choice and Golden Globes.  I'm already two up, so yay, me.

Best Director

Chloe Zhao - Hamnet
Josh Safdie - Marty Supreme
Paul Thomas Anderson - One Battle After Another
Joachim Trier - Sentimental Value
Ryan Coogler - Sinners

Again, no surprises.  This category has historically been dominated by the same names over and over so it's nice to see some relatively new faces.  Not really refuting the #OscarsSoWhite but Zhao is pulling double duty as both the token woman and a POC.

Best Actor

Timothee Chalamet - Marty Supreme
Leonardo DiCaprio - One Battle After Another
Ethan Hawke - Blue Moon
Michael B. Jordan - Sinners
Wagner Moura - The Secret Agent

In a just world, Jordan walks away with this.  It's a dual performance, meaning he literally did twice the work.

Best Actress

Jessie Buckley - Hamnet
Rose Byrne - If I Had Legs, I'd Kick You
Kate Hudson - Song Sung Blue
Renate Reinsve - Sentimental Value
Emma Stone - Bugonia

As usual, this is a much more competitive category.  Buckley is the favorite but you can't discount Byrne or Stone.  Hudson is a surprise contender, sneaking the spot from Ariana Grande or Cynthia Erivo, I suspect.

Best Supporting Actor

Benecio Del Toro - One Battle After Another
Jacob Elordi - Frankenstein
Delroy Lindo - Sinners
Sean Penn - One Battle After Another
Stellan Skarsgard - Sentimental Value

I would love to see Lindo win for this.  He gave a phenomenal performance and he is overdue to be recognized.

Best Supporting Actress

Elle Fanning - Sentimental Value
Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas - Sentimental Value
Amy Madigan - Weapons
Wunmi Mosaku - Sinners
Teyana Taylor - One Battle After Another

Interesting that Fanning got put in Supporting when she was up for Lead in the Critics' Choice and Golden Globes.  Madigan is the big upset inclusion and it would be great (for all horror fans) if she won but I don't think it's super likely.  Likewise, it's great to see Mosaku (who has quietly been putting out great performance after great performance for years) get recognized but that's probably all she's getting.

Best Adapted Screenplay

Bugonia
Frankenstein
Hamnet
One Battle After Another
Train Dreams

No surprises here.

Best Original Screenplay

Blue Moon
It Was Just an Accident
Marty Supreme
Sentimental Value
Sinners

My fear is that Sinners will only win here, like Straight Outta Compton, because the Academy is more interested in looking progressive than actually being progressive. Hope I'm wrong.

Best Animated Feature

This is the exact same lineup as the Critics' Choice.

Best International Feature

The Secret Agent - Brazil
It Was Just an Accident - France
Sentimental Value - Norway
Sirat - Spain
The Voice of Hind Rajab - Tunisia

Lockstep with the other awards.

Best Documentary Feature

The Alabama Solution
Come See Me in the Good Light
Cutting Through Rocks
Mr. Nobody Against Putin
The Perfect Neighbor

The only two I've heard anything about are Come and See Me, which looks depressing as fuck, and Perfect Neighbor, which is on Netflix.

Best Animated Short

Butterfly
Forevergreen
The Girl Who Cried Pearls
Retirement Plan
The Three Sisters

Best Casting

Nina Gold - Hamnet
Jennifer Venditti - Marty Supreme
Cassandra Kulukundis - One Battle After Another
Gabriel Domingues - The Secret Agent
Francine Maisler - Sinners

This is a new category and interestingly, a career field dominated by women.  I feel like it's going to go however the nominees for Best Picture go, but we'll see.

Best Cinematography

Frankenstein - Dan Laustsen
Marty Supreme - Darius Khondji
One Battle After Another - Michael Bauman
Sinners - Autumn Durald Arkapaw
Train Dreams - Adolpho Veloso

All new names this year.  Exciting.

Best Costume Design

Avatar: Fire and Ash
Frankenstein
Hamnet
Marty Supreme
Sinners

Okay, so I have some quibbles with Avatar being included here.  Nearly the entire movie is CGI, so exactly which costumes are we highlighting here?  Like, I get it, but I am side-eyeing it.

Best Documentary Short

All the Empty Rooms
Armed Only with a Camera: The Life and Death of Brent Renaud
Children No More: "Were and Are Gone"
The Devil is Busy
Perfectly a Strangeness

Best Film Editing

F1
Marty Supreme
One Battle After Another
Sentimental Value
Sinners

Best Live-Action Short

Butcher's Stain
A Friend of Dorothy
Jane Austen's Period Drama
The Singers
Two People Exchanging Saliva

Best Makeup and Hairstyling

Several surprises here.  More horror!  The Smashing Machine kind of feels like even more of a snub, somehow, by being included here.  And I've never even heard of Kokuhu.  No idea.

Best Original Score

Bugonia - Jerskin Fendrix
Frankenstein - Alexandre Desplat
Hamnet - Max Richter
One Battle After Another - Jonny Greenwood
Sinners - Ludwig Goransson

Best Original Song

"Dear Me" - Diane Warren: Relentless
"Golden" - KPop Demon Hunters
"I Lied to You" - Sinners
"Sweet Dreams of Joy" - Viva Verdi!
"Train Dreams" - Train Dreams

Couple of odd little inclusions considering the distinct absence of Wicked: For Good.

Best Production Design

Frankenstein
Hamnet
Marty Supreme
One Battle After Another
Sinners

All these categories are the same movies.  It just makes for such a boring ceremony.

Best Sound

F1
Frankenstein
One Battle After Another
Sinners
Sirat

Best Visual Effects

Avatar: Fire and Ash
F1
Jurassic World: Rebirth
The Lost Bus

Sinners

Rebirth flopped super hard so I am surprised it's included here.  Like the Academy thought it should have been a blockbuster because it's a franchise.

So there you have it.  Ceremony is March 15th so we have a little less than two months to get everything in bold watched.  The good news is that, thanks to all the repeats, we've knocked out a few of the major contenders already.

You guys know the drill by now.  This blog is now Oscar central until March 2.  Check back here for... I was going to say updates but that's kind of dumb since you'll be able to see all the posts from the side menu there.  I guess check here to see how many I get done?  All in one convenient list?

2024 Oscar Nominations

Best Picture

No real surprises here.  There's the obligatory Holocaust-But-Centered-on-Germans film, the Weird One, the Blockbuster/Here's-One-for-the-Plebs, a couple of biopics, a Black-led and an Asian film so they can pretend they're not racist.

Best Director

Justine Triet - Anatomy of a Fall
Martin Scorsese - Killers of the Flower Moon
Christopher Nolan - Oppenheimer
Yorgos Lanthimos - Poor Things
Jonathan Glazer - The Zone of Interest

Looks like Triet got the Woman in Directing slot so no room for Greta Gerwig.  Everyone else is white and male, so expected.

Best Actor

Bradley Cooper - Maestro
Colman Domingo - Rustin
Paul Giamatti - The Holdovers
Cillian Murphy - Oppenheimer
Jeffrey Wright - American Fiction

No big upsets here unless you're Leonardo DiCaprio.

Best Actress

Annette Benning - Nyad
Lily Gladstone - Killers of the Flower Moon
Sandra Hüller - Anatomy of a Fall
Carey Mulligan - Maestro
Emma Stone - Poor Things

No Margot Robbie.  No Julianne Moore.

Best Supporting Actor

Robert De Niro - Killers of the Flower Moon
Robert Downey, Jr. - Oppenheimer
Ryan Gosling - Barbie
Mark Ruffalo - Poor Things

Best Supporting Actress

Emily Blunt - Oppenheimer
Danielle Brooks - The Color Purple
America Ferrara - Barbie
Jodie Foster - Nyad
Da'Vine Joy Randolph - The Holdovers

The Academy is going all-in for Nyad.  No Natalie Portman.

Best Adapted Screenplay

American Fiction
Barbie
Oppenheimer
Poor Things
The Zone of Interest

The Barbenheimer showdown for real.

Best Original Screenplay

Anatomy of a Fall
The Holdovers
Maestro
Past Lives

The Eternal Memory
Four Daughters

Best International Feature

"I'm Just Ken" - Barbie
"It Never Went Away" - American Symphony
"Wahzhazhe (A Song for My People)" - Killers of the Flower Moon
"What Was I Made For?" - Barbie

What a world.  Ridley Scott just got as many nominations as the origin story of Flamin' Hot Cheetos.  Amazing.

Best Original Score

American Fiction
Killers of the Flower Moon
Oppenheimer
Poor Things

Best Production Design

Barbie
Killers of the Flower Moon
Napoleon
Oppenheimer
Poor Things

Best Film Editing

Anatomy of a Fall
The Holdovers
Killers of the Flower Moon
Oppenheimer
Poor Things

Best Sound

Maestro
Oppenheimer
The Zone of Interest

Fun fact:  the sound editors had to create a whole ambient overlay to cover the sound of Tom Cruise's joints creaking.

Best Visual Effects

The Creator
Godzilla: Minus One
Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One
Napoleon

Okay, so Scott ended up with three nominations.  That's respectable.  Probably still going to feel like a snub, though.

Oppenheimer is leading the board but I expected more for Barbie, if I'm honest.  Cutting Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig is a slight.  The May December camp is probably feeling the sting too.  Hilarious that two major films about women were overshadowed by their supporting male leads.  But it means we're getting a live performance from Gosling which makes all the misogyny worth it.

As always, the clock starts now on me watching as many of these things as I can until the ceremony on March 10.  Stay tuned.

95th Academy Award Nominations

You know what goes great with coffee on a Tuesday morning?  Outrage.   *ahem*  Why in THEE FUCK is Top Gun 2 nominated for Best Picture?!  And Glass Onion gets the pity Adapted Screenplay nod??  Excuse me??  And where exactly is Nope?  Nowhere to be seen!  SIX!  SIX nominations for Top Gun!  *sips coffee* Oh, the whole main cast of EEAO got nominated, that's nice.  And Brendan Fraser.  That makes me happy.  No disrespect to Cate Blanchett but if Michelle Yeoh doesn't win, I will riot.  Haven't seen either movie yet, but I've loved Michelle Yeoh since Wing Chun.  What the fuck is Triangle of Sadness?  And why didn't RRR get on the International Feature list?  I thought that was a shoe-in.

Whew.  I have seen nearly none of these.  Oscar nominations come out next Tuesday, so at least I didn't miss those.  I put a note in my calendar app to remind me.

Lot of posthumous nominations here.  Lot of cancelled shit too.  Not a lot of surprises.  I think the biggest snub is probably The Menu but it's being called a horror movie, so maybe not a surprise.  I haven't seen it anyway.  I guess I'll add a bunch of shit to my TBW list now.  I was doing so well keeping it below 1300 too.

Oscar Nominations for 2022

27th Critics' Choice Nominations (2022)

Okay, so I wasn't sure if I was going to post this.

There was a big thing earlier this year about how the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), the group that determines the Golden Globe nominees and winners, wasn't diverse, actively fought against adding new members, and potentially used kickbacks and bribes in its selection.  NBC dropped its coverage of the ceremony, a bunch of stars are protesting, as well as major studios like Warner Brothers and HBO.  Now, I've posted the Golden Globes nominees for years here and it sucks that they are like this, but I really can't (even with my small-ass platform) condone corruption on this level.

The HFPA has stated that they are taking steps to improve, hiring more members, hiring a diversity consultant, implementing new rules for receiving gifts for members over the next 18 months.  So maybe I will resume coverage in 2023.  But for now, I'm going to instead give you the Critics Choice nominations for movies and TV.  They probably have equal weight as far as Oscar predictions and they're not as morally ambiguous (yet.  Don't forget that we are in the Worst Timeline.)

So here we go.

There's not a lot different from the Golden Globes.  Spike Lee still got snubbed but at least Minari is better represented.  I read somewhere that Steven Yeun is the first Asian-American ever nominated for Best Actor.  Ever.  Like in 90-something years.  When people like James Shigeta and Toshiro Mifune existed.  Anyway, more movies than ever are streaming so I have a good feeling about being able to see most of these before April 25.  Even if I have to buy Apple+ for a month to get Greyhound and Wolfwalkers.  As always, keep checking back here to see my progress.

78th Annual Golden Globes Nominations

Uh, did you guys know the Golden Globes nominations came out yesterday?  Normally, I set a calendar alert so I don't miss it but this year... well, it's been a rough decade this year.  At any rate, here are the nominees.  I've seen practically none of them so this is going to be great.

"Fight for You" - Judas and the Black Messiah
"Hear My Voice" - The Trial of the Chicago 7
"Io Si" - The Life Ahead
"Speak Now" - One Night in Miami
"Tigress & Tweed" - The United States vs. Billie Holiday

The dearth of hyperlinks there should indicate my predicament.  I had just gotten my TBW list under 1300 things and now it's back to 1350.  Some/all of these better get nominated for an Oscar or I'm not going to see them for a decade.

Best TV Series - Drama

The Crown
Lovecraft Country
The Mandalorian
Ozark
Ratched

Best TV Series - Musical or Comedy

Emily in Paris
The Flight Attendant
The Great
Schitt's Creek
Ted Lasso

Best Actress in a TV Series - Musical or Comedy

Lily Collins - Emily in Paris
Kaley Cuoco - The Flight Attendant
Elle Fanning - The Great
Jane Levy - Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist
Catherine O'Hara - Schitt's Creek

We just started watching The Great and it's pretty... well, great.  Elle Fanning is marvelous but I love her bitchy servant Marial.  The Mandalorian is the only full current season I've seen.

Best Limited Series, Anthology, or Made for TV Movie

Unorthodox

Best Actor in a Limited Series, Anthology, or Made for TV Movie

Best Actress in a Television Supporting Role

Helena Bonham Carter - The Crown
Julia Garner - Ozark
Annie Murphy - Schitt's Creek
Cynthia Nixon - Ratched

The only one of these I saw was Queen's Gambit.  It was very good even for someone who doesn't give a shit about chess.
It's been a weird year and these are some pretty weird choices for nominees.  We'll see how history judges them in a century or so.

92nd Academy Awards Nominations (2020)

It's time for the only thing that makes January bearable!  (Also happy birthday month to my brother, whatever.)  Oscar nominations are here!  And they are... so very white and male.  /sigh

Best Picture

Ford v. Ferrari
The Irishman
Jojo Rabbit
Joker
Little Women
Marriage Story
1917
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Parasite

No real shocks here.  Pretty much the same line up as the Golden Globes.

Best Director

Martin Scorsese, The Irishman
Todd Phillips, Joker
Sam Mendes, 1917
Quentin Tarantino, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Bong Joon-Ho, Parasite

Not a single female director.  Again.

Best Actor

Antonio Banderas, Pain and Glory
Leonardo DiCaprio, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Adam Driver, Marriage Story
Joaquin Phoenix, Joker
Jonathan Pryce, The Two Popes

First-time nomination for Antonio Banderas, so that's nice.

Best Actress

Cynthia Erivo, Harriet
Scarlett Johansson, Marriage Story
Saorise Ronan, Little Women
Charlize Theron, Bombshell
Renee Zellweger, Judy

Apparently the Academy really hated The Farewell.

Best Supporting Actor

Tom Hanks, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
Anthony Hopkins, The Two Popes
Al Pacino, The Irishman
Joe Pesci, The Irishman
Brad Pitt, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Again, the exact same line-up as the Golden Globes.  Yikes.

Best Supporting Actress

Kathy Bates, Richard Jewell
Laura Dern, Marriage Story
Scarlett Johansson, Jojo Rabbit
Florence Pugh, Little Women
Margot Robbie, Bombshell

Scarlett's doubled her chances of walking away with a trophy.  People were saying J.Lo got robbed for her slot, though, so maybe ScarJo should hire extra security.

Best Original Screenplay

Knives Out - Rian Johnson
Marriage Story - Noah Baumbach
1917 - Sam Mendes and Krysty Wilson-Cairns
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood - Quentin Tarantino
Parasite - Bong Joon-Ho and Han Jin-Wan

I can't believe this is the only nomination Knives Out got.  Like, they could have had 10 nominees for Best Picture and just ... didn't.

Best Adapted Screenplay

The Irishman - Steve Zaillian
Jojo Rabbit - Taika Watiti
Joker - Todd Phillips and Scott Silver
Little Women - Greta Gerwig
The Two Popes - Anthony McCarten

Best Animated Feature

How to Train Your Dragon:  The Hidden World
I Lost My Body
Klaus
Missing Link
Toy Story 4

Holy shit.  I thought Frozen 2 was a lock for this category but no.  Netflix dropped two in there.

Best International Feature

Corpus Christi
Honeyland
Les Miserables
Pain and Glory
Parasite

Parasite and Honeyland are both double dipping here.  It might have been nice to see a little more diversity but I haven't seen any of these so what do I know?

Best Documentary Feature

American Factory
The Cave
The Edge of Democracy
For Sama
Honeyland

Best Documentary Short

In the Absence
Learning to Skateboard in a War Zone (If You're a Girl)
Life Overtakes Me
St. Louis Superman
Walk Run Cha-Cha

Best Live Action Short

Brotherhood
Nefta Football Club
The Neighbor's Window
Saria
A Sister

It's going to be really hard to keep from mixing up A Sister with Sister in the animated short category.

Best Animated Short

Daughter
Hair Love
Kitbull
Memorable
Sister

I've actually seen Hair Love and Kitbull.  I'll try and find links to them in lieu of actual reviews.

Best Original Score

Joker
Little Women
Marriage Story
1917
Star Wars:  The Rise of Skywalker

Best Original Song

"I Can't Let You Throw Yourself Away" - Toy Story 4
"I'm Gonna Love Me Again" - Rocketman
"I'm Standing With You" - Breakthrough
"Into the Unknown" - Frozen 2
"Stand Up" - Harriet

Yeesh.  Frozen 2 got one nom that puts it in the same category as some super-Christian film about a kid falling though a frozen river.

Best Sound Editing

Ford v. Ferrari
Joker
1917
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Star Wars:  The Rise of Skywalker

Best Sound Mixing

Ad Astra
Ford v. Ferrari
Joker
1917
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Best Production Design

The Irishman
Jojo Rabbit
1917
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Parasite

Best Cinematography

The Irishman
Joker
The Lighthouse
1917
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Apparently, The Lighthouse is completely bonkers.  I fucking hated The Witch (same director), though, so I'm not holding my breath.

Best Makeup and Hairstyling

Bombshell
Joker
Judy
Maleficent:  Mistress of Evil
1917

Best Costume Design

The Irishman
Jojo Rabbit
Joker
Little Women
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Really surprised 1917 didn't get nominated over Joker here.  The Academy loves period films and it's pretty rare for them to choose modern wardrobes.

Best Film Editing

Ford v. Ferrari
The Irishman
Jojo Rabbit
Joker
Parasite

I am fucking shocked, however, that 1917 isn't in this category.  The whole point/schtick of the film is that it's supposed to look like it was shot in one continuous take.  Wild.

Best Visual Effects

Avengers:  Endgame
The Irishman
The Lion King
1917
Star Wars:  The Rise of Skywalker

Ah, yes.  And finally, the category for films that actually made money.  Disney is 3/5 here so they're obviously the favorites but I wouldn't be surprised if Netflix pulls off an upset.  Depends on how the night goes.
